Four hundred and fifty years ago, Luís Vaz de Camões published what would become the greatest epic poem ever written in Portuguese. Os Lusíadas recounts Vasco da Gama’s first voyage to India across the Atlantic Ocean, inaugurating a new stage of the European Maritime Expansion. Houghton Library holds one of the largest collections of Os Lusíadas rare editions outside of Portugal. In this exhibition, you will discover items that demonstrate the historical relevance of this poem, as well as an opportunity to reassess the impact of European imperialism on world history.
